Authorized User Tradelines: A Real Boost or a Waste of Money?

September 14, 2026

What is an authorized user tradeline?

When someone adds you as an authorized user on their credit card, the entire history of that account — its age, limit, and payment record — can appear on your credit report. A well-aged card with a low balance and perfect payments can add points quickly, especially on a thin or damaged file.

When it works

  • The card is at least 2+ years old (older is better).
  • The balance stays under 10% of the limit.
  • The account has zero late payments.
  • The issuer reports authorized users to all three bureaus (most major banks do; many store cards do not).

When it backfires

If the primary cardholder runs up the balance or misses a payment, that negative activity lands on your report too. You inherit the account's behavior for as long as you remain on it.

The honest take

An authorized user boost is a supplement, not a solution. It cannot erase collections, late payments, or charge-offs — and mortgage lenders increasingly discount AU accounts during manual underwriting. The foundation is still your own primary accounts: a secured card or credit-builder loan in your name, paid perfectly, plus removal of inaccurate negatives through disputes.
